Volunteer Job Descriptions

• Job description - egg addling
  

  PURPOSE: To addle goose eggs and diminish number of gosling hatched.
  EXPLANATION: Geese without goslings 
  will not remain in an area they are being hazed in. Geese 
  with goslings will not leave an area regardless of the amount 
  of hazing. Hazing of geese with goslings should not be done. 
  No addling should be done to an egg that is >/= 14 days old. 
  DURATION: Addling will be done every seven (7) days 
  during nesting season.

• Job description - harassment maintenance
  

  PURPOSE: To reduce and maintain the number of Canada 
  geese in Collins Park to thirty (30) or less. 
  METHOD: Volunteers will fill initially four (4) shifts 
  per day with water and land harassment. Preferably two 
  (2) boaters and one (1) land chaser with a dog. 
  EXPLANATION: Shifts initially will be: 
  5am-7am
  10am-12pm
  3pm-5pm
  7pm-9pm

Three days was all it took.

Saturday morning, June 3, I arrived at Collins Park in Scotia with my wife, Kat. As the rain fell, we met up with Laura and Matt Brown, residents of Scotia. We counted almost 200 Canada geese, the very ones sentenced to death in the coming weeks at the behest of the Scotia village board... CLICK HERE TO READ THE WHOLE STORY...

Population stabilization program

If you enjoy kayaking or just being outdoors, you can have a lot of fun while doing something worthwhile.

• Phase 1:

  The Geese are currently nesting - The first step in population stabilization is egg oiling.
  This will be carried out from now through early May. We provide training and this is done as a group on the weekends. Please call 518-370-4009 or email brownm@nycap.rr.com if you would like to help.

• Phase 2:

  After nesting is over we will be begin a 3 day intensive hazing program. No additional volunteers will be needed for this phase.
  

• Phase 3:

  This is the fun part! We will be begin our hazing program. We have a trained Border Collie and handlers. Volunteers are needed to patrol land and water.
